In the second game of the bumper weekend in Port Elizabeth, title-chasing Maties outplayed hosts Madibaz to win 57-38 on Sunday.
Spurred on by the home crowd, Madibaz were looking to upset Maties and come back from their loss against Tuks in their previous game – bit it was not to be.
The first quarter started out very strong for Nicholé Taljaard’s Maties side, rattling Madibaz despite the crowd cheering their side on. Madibaz worked well to come back from 1-5 down to draw level at 7-all before ending the first quarter behind at 9-11.
The solid defence of Madibaz in MTN Interceptor of the Match Jeanie Steyn and Hlumisa Sithonga were being put to the test by Maties with Sian Moore netting points at regular intervals.
The second quarter was dominated by a quick passing, attacking Maties, playing with confidence and netting every shot they took. Meanwhile, Madibaz were squandering chances up front. Maties went into half time leading 30-18, showing they meant business.
The third quarter was a lot more even, both sides taking turns in scoring points, but Maties still looked the far better team, while Madibaz had a sense of fatigue hanging over them. The quarter ended 41-30 in favour of Maties with two Powerplays still to be taken.
Nicola Smith made sure the final quarter was Maties’ again as she kept Jody Vorster of Madibaz at bay. Maties also used the Powerplay to secure themselves a bonus point with a 57 – 38 win.
Madibaz were not up to the battle against Maties, while Maties stay unbeaten in this year’s Varsity Netball tournament – though a bonus point behind Tuks who they face in the first clash on Monday.
