Potchefstroom Gymnasium proved to be the better side when they beat Hoer Volkskool Potchefstroom 6-0 in the high school rivalry at the NWU-Astro on Sunday 12 May.
Anne van Aarde gave Gimmies an early lead when she scored off of a short corner after only five minutes of play. Van Aarde proceeded to double Gimmies’ lead to 2-0 when she scored a fantastic field goal too. Jhnelle de Villiers gave Gimmies a confidence boost going into half time when she added her name to the score sheet, leaving it up to Volkies to reply in the last twenty minutes of play.
Volkies’ Shaney Heath had her work cut out for her in the second half, as Gimmies continued to apply tons of pressure. Leane Jordaan tried her hardest to get Volkies back in it, but a foul on a Gimmies player gave them the advantage as they cleared the ball from their own half. Hanlie Badenhorst punished Volkies when she found the back of the net to take Gimmies’ goal tally to 4-0 with ten minutes left to play. Things only got worse for Volkies when Irene Hein slipped the ball into the back of the goals, followed by Anne van Aarde who got her hat trick which solidified a massive 6-0 win.
Potchefstroom Gimnasium are set to take on Hoer Volkskool Potchefstroom in two weeks in the FNB Classic Clash, where the superior school will be decided.
