One of the features of the Stellenbosch leg of Varsity Athletics 2019 was the fast times achieved in the sprint events. This despite the fact that the meeting took place at sea level and not altitude which traditionally is more conducive to fast time than at the coast.
Varsity Sports caught up with one of the heroes of the Coetzenburg event, NWU’s Chederick van Wyk.
“We were very happy with how things went in Stellenbosch. My 10.14 in the 100m would’ve been my PB but it was a handheld time. Let’s see how things go tonight in Potch – I would like to take gold in the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m relay tonight so I am looking forward to it. I took part in our provincial championships last Saturday so I am happy with how the preparations have gone. We came back from Stellies with a plan and now it’s just a matter of executing,” said a confident Van Wyk.
When Varsity Sports asked Van Wyk who would be the toughest opponents for the night, he answered diplomatically: “I think the whole line-up will be looking to run fast and cross the line first. I feel I am stronger in the 200m at the moment but we will be looking to run fast times in all the sprint events. The Coetzenburg track is new and fast and was very conducive to fast times as the results showed. My dream is to eventually run under 10 seconds – when I will achieve that only time will tell though,” according to 23-year old from Prieska in the Northern Cape.
“I would like to encourage people in Potchefstroom to come out to the Kenneth McArthur track tonight and experience the fireworks. We will be looking to entertain,” he concluded.
The first event commence at 15h30 this afternoon.
