Game Six of the second round of action in the Varsity Basketball tournament, pitted two Tshwane rivals, the University of Pretoria and the Tshwane University of technology, where Tuks managed to claim a famous 58-33 win over their neighbours TUT at the Wits Old Mutual Sports Hall.
Both Tuks and TUT were still going in search of their first wins of the campaign, after suffering a bruising defeats at the hands of VUT and UKZN respectively.
With everything still to prove for both teams, both the sides from Pretoria went toe to toe in a tough encounter, where there was very little to tell between the two teams in the first quarter. Tuks did however have the upper hand slightly in the dying moments of the first quarter, which saw them in the lead to close off play. The second quarter was when TUT decided to take their power play, which saws them get closer to their rivals but the slight edge remained as Tuks were able to go into the break with the score at 27-23.
The last two quarters were a matter of the likes of J. Karume and C. Matondo, cooking up something for TUT to get back in the game. Unfortunately Otshepegile Msiza, Braydon Wooley and Rufaro Warinda connected very well going forward for Tuks, often shifting the ball to both sides of the court rapidly and giving other teammates space to land the three-point baskets.
In the end the deficit became too much for TUT to find a way back and Tuks secured their first win of the campaign, which also earned them the city of Tshwane’s bragging rights.
