With Varsity 7s around the corner, let’s take a look at the 7 coolest things about Joburg’s hottest 7s event.

Varsity 7s is upon us once again, with the tournament taking place 5-6 October at Pirates Club Greenside. The tournament promises an incredible rugby spectacle, as well as beer tents, celebrities and amazing prizes to be won. Let’s take a look at the reasons you should be at the Varsity 7s.

1) The Rugby
First and foremost, the undeniably awesome rugby action will be lighting up the Pirates Greenside fields. Twelve teams will now compete for the Varsity 7s title, with the competitors being split up into three pools. The tournament will take on a pool format, instead of the round robin format of previous years. The top two teams per group and next best two teams qualify for the Varsity 7s quarter-finals.

2) Beer tent and the Springboks
The Springboks will meet the old foe in Pretoria this weekend, it promises to be probably the most exciting game of rugby ever. The Springboks will be eager to get a double over the visitors and the All Blacks are desperate to get revenge for their defeat at home. With tickets to the Loftus Clash sold out, come watch the game at the second-best place you can, at the Varsity 7s.

3) The Steers Build-a-Burger
Steers brings you the forever exhilarating Build-a-Burger competition where two teams are selected to compete to put together a giant rubber burger. The chosen contestants will see who can build their burger the quickest by running, collecting pieces, and building the burger. The winner gets an awesome prize from Steers!

4) Samsung J-Jive
The Samsung J Jive is always a favourite amongst the movers and shakers in the crowd. Six contestants have a chance to show their moves and have a dance off against each other while the DJ spins the tracks. The winner is chosen by who the fans scream the loudest for, with the winner receiving a Samsung hamper.

5) 5FM outside broadcast
The cool, stylish and famous 5FM DJ’s will be performing an outside broadcast from the side of the field. So, if you’ve dreamt of an autograph from some of South Africa’s finest DJ’s, the Varsity 7s is the perfect time to get one.

6) FNB Rugby Wall
Some rugby players in the crowd? Five skilful fans will be from the stands. Each contestant will have one chance to pass the ball into the giant Kruger Rand Coin with the winner getting some awesome prizes supplied by FNB.

7) Local Rivalries
There are some intense rivalries waiting to be contested. Current Varsity 7s champions UJ (University of Johannesburg) have been placed in Pool B with their newly promoted arch-nemeses Wits (University of the Witwatersrand), with both keen on claiming bragging rights. Some other great rivalries are Pool A’s Western Cape derby between UWC (University of the Western Cape) and CPUT (Cape Peninsula University of Technology) and the Eastern Cape contest with NMU (Nelson Mandela University) and WSU (Walter Sisulu University) clashing for the South Coast crown.
