South African Basketball community excited about Varsity Basketball’s Power Play.
Varsity Basketball will feature an innovative Power Play which is sure to heat up the already exhilarating game.
The Power Play should create some tension amongst the teams. The Power Play is a vibrant feature of most Varsity Sports codes and has been an outright success in accelerating play.
The Power Play rule is; for two minutes, every point scored will count for double, which will add extra excitement to the already exhilarating game.
Wits head coach Tshiamo Ngakane believes the effectiveness of the Power Play in other Varsity Sports codes shows that it will work wonders in Varsity Basketball.
“The Power Play is an interesting concept that is going to add a completely new dimension to the game. The reality is that Power Play concepts have worked in other Varsity Sports codes and there’s no reason why it can’t work with basketball.
“Obviously, we’ve spent some time at practices going through and studying the impact and trying to strategise how to use it effectively. The results have been interesting. The shot selection has been interesting. I think you’re going to see a lot of huge swings during Varsity Basketball games. And that’s going to keep people on the edge of their seats. It’s going to be massive when teams are evenly matched because the Power Play could really break open the play.”
USSA Basketball Chair Nduduzo Ndawo believes the Power Play will benefit the strategically astute teams.
“It is an interesting and tricky initiative that will benefit teams that are of high efficiency. This is where we will see which players put in the 10 000 hours versus the chancers.
“Teams will have an opportunity to take advantage. If you have got big game temperament, you can use it to your advantage.”
This exciting new addition to Varsity Sports will take place over two weekends; the first round will take place from 5-7 October and the second from 12-14 October, with the final on the last day of Round Two, with all fixtures taking place at the Wits University Sports Hall.
