We caught up with one of the debutants to ask her about her experience of Varsity Netball so far. Venetia is a 19-year-old Sports Science student. She is also one of UP-Tuks’s brightest prospects. Here’s what she had to say.
What did you make of your first ever experience of Varsity Netball?
“It was very overwhelming, but so far the best netball experience I’ve ever had.”
How are the nerves holding up ahead of this Sunday’s game? Have they settled down from the first match?
“I was so stressed that the day before our departure that I was nervous and nauseous. I even had tummy aches. Before the match I was really calm and thought I had everything under control, and as soon the countdown started I was rattled.”
How are some of the more experienced girls helping you prepare? Do they have any advice which they’ve given you?
“They really helped calm me down, reassuring me that we have had more stressful games before. And the fact that I have played with them before helped a lot.”
What are you looking forward to the most ahead of this weekend?
“The experience and talent. Being able to see the best and play against them.”
Who are some of the players you look up to who have played in the Varsity Netball tournament?
“Lenize Potgieter is one of my Varsity Netball idols. She is an inspiration for all.”
How does it feel coming into a team like UP- Tuks which has established such a strong winning culture?
“At first it was a huge adjustment at the beginning of the year. But after a while if your mindset is right you’ll get the hang of it all.”
Do you think the team will recover from the difficult start to the tournament?
“Yes for sure. It’s only the beginning of the tournament and the best is yet to come. It aint over till the fat lady sings. And the underdogs always have a way to the top without anyone noticing.”
What are some of the improvements you think have to be made?
“Communication overall. And teamwork is the main aspect.”
The team will now travel to Stellenbosch as they face two very strong teams in Maties and the Madibaz in Round Two action and coach Jenny believes their best is yet to come.
“It’s still early and we are still very hungry. We are getting ourselves ready for our best effort as we speak.”
