Last week, Wits Varsity Football goalkeeper Kamohelo Moorosi signed for PSL side Highlands Park.

The Varsity Football tournament is always a great platform for footballers, who choose to pursue their academics as well as their potential shots at a sporting career. Alumni of the tournament are always quick to point out the great impact Varsity Football had on them securing lucrative contracts with professional clubs and as well as educating them beyond the game. A fine example of this is Lebogang Manyama, who recently signed a long term deal with Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs this week, after spending some time abroad at Konyaspor and as well as at SuperSport United and Cape Town City.

Another player doing big things but not quite a Varsity Football graduate yet, is Kamohelo Moorosi, who was recently signed by PSL club Highlands Park FC.

Moorosi is currently doing his second year BA at Wits University, but also plays as a goalkeeper for the Wits football club. He featured for Wits in the 2017 Varsity Football tournament but is unable to play in this season’s campaign as he did not acquire enough academic credits to participate in 2018.

Kamohelo, however, has continued to train with the Wits team, even participating in the 2018 USSA games in order to keep fit and keep chasing his dreams. The coaching staff at Wits have showed great faith in Moorosi, to keep him part of the setup even though he is unable to play Varsity Football this season. The belief is that he will be back to set the scene alight once more in Varsity Football, while he is still a student.

Varsity Sports caught up with Kamohelo Moorosi to have a short chat about how things have been so far for him with regards to being sidelined and the new deal he has put pen to paper on.

“I’m obviously frustrated that I could not come out and help the team in this year’s tournament, but I’m fighting hard to get my studies back on track to come back and help the team achieve great things.

“I love playing football and I’ve continued playing but I’ve now decided to find a better balance with my academics and so far it’s working out quite well for me, I am also happy to see the boys are doing well in the Varsity Football tournament,” Moorosi added.

Kamohelo was earlier announced as a goalkeeper acquisition for Highlands Park FC, who have just recently been promoted to the top flight of the PSL this season.

“I am honoured and excited to have signed for a team like Highlands Park, it’s always great to see that when you work hard and go out there to do your best, someone is always watching you even though you may believe otherwise.

“I really look forward to the challenge, where I’ll get an opportunity to showcase my talent and of course learn more from my coaches and teammates at the club.”

Moorosi went on to thank Wits and Varsity Football, for giving him the platform to showcase his skill.

“Varsity Football helps us a lot as young footballers in university, as it gives us great exposure for clubs to see us play. If it wasn’t for Varsity Football many of us would find it hard to continue playing football as there wouldn’t be a platform to give us exposure and a chance to pursue our studies at the same time. I do hope to come out and play for Wits next season again.

“My future plans also involve being educated and playing football abroad some day, that is how I’d love for my life to turn out in the end, just doing what I love, which is football,” Moorosi concluded.

Sanele Nene, the Wits Football manager was also ecstatic about Kamohelo’s progress as a footballer.

“Nothing gives me greater joy than seeing guys progress in their football careers while still maintaining their academic careers at the biggest institution in Africa! These are the moments we live for. Educated Footballers will be the norm and not the exception,” Nene expressed himself. 

Wits continued their good run in the tournament last night, defeating one of the tournament favourites NWU at the Bidvest Stadium. They now currently sit second on the log table ahead of a date with the University of Limpopo at ‘fortress’ Bidvest Stadium next Thursday.
