The University of the Western Cape has had the worst start to a Varsity Football campaign in their history, losing all of their three matches. Could the writing be on the wall for the 2015 holders of this cup? It is going to take a lot of courage for the boys from Bellville to get out of the slump that they find themselves in.
With four more rounds to play, now is the time for the Bushies to start fighting and get maximum points. Varsity Sports caught up with Agmat Ceres, who should be playing for this season but due to his National First Division Commitments he cannot feature for UWC. Ceres has recently joined NFD side Ubuntu Cape Town after being released by Ajax Cape Town, spending more than a decade at Ikamva.
“I don’t think that the team’s performance is what it should be. I can’t blame anyone because we don’t know what is happening in the camp but whatever it is they need to sort it out. However, I do blame the players for the character that they showing. UWC is known for being hard and having a good fighting spirit and the players haven’t showed any of that. As soon as they start playing with more heart and desire to win they will win more games.
The former Amajita player has really been missed by his side, as that team lacks character and leaders who will fight and sweat blood for the team on the field of play. They have a huge task this week if they want to make the last four, they are home to Varsity Football newcomers University of Limpopo. They need all the maximum points at home and with the first three losses hanging over their heads, we await to see what the end result will be.
“I think they just miss my presence is the change room because I like to make jokes and see the guys smile. But they don’t need me. This year’s team is actually one of the best teams the university had with a really good technical team. But one thing that coaches can’t teach players is to have character and that comes from within. So the players have to dig deep and show character and play with big hearts. You can’t have two players in the team fighting and the rest just going through the motions.”
Here’s how UWC did in their last match:
Can they make the top four? Or Will the University of Limpopo add more suffering to the poor season that UWC has had? We await the clash, to take place on Thursday and to see who will come out victorious at the end of the 90 minutes.
“Those three games are done now. The only thing they can do now is look forward to the next four games and get maximum points. I feel that if they can come out of this slump, which they are in, then they can go on to win it. The only thing out of reach is probably having a home final. I definitely believe the guys can make it back. But they have to start with a win this Thursday”
The match takes place at the UWC Stadium on Thursday the 16th at 18:30.
