The Blitzboks are arguably SA’s most successful and dominant national team in 2017. They have become the country’s pride and joy. Which makes Varsity 7s more significant than ever as we look to our future stars. Here are five to keep an eye on this weekend.
Marco Mason (Kovsies)
Marco Mason has represented Shimlas in the Varsity Cup for a few seasons and has cemented his spot in the starting fifteen. He’s a man that can play at 11, 14 or 15, due to his ability to kick the ball, both accurately and with power and strategy, as well as his speed and power. If there was ever a player built to succeed in sevens, it was Marco Mason.
Dewald Naude (Tuks)
Tuks won the Varsity Cup and a key member of the winning formula was paceman Dewald Naude. Naude was a livewire in the Tuks backline and provided the spark they often needed in the final 20 mins. Keep an eye on this pocket rocket.
Ruan Mostert (UWC)
Ruan Mostert was a standout performer in 2016. Built like a burly lock, but possessing the agility and skill of a backline player, he is the ultimate sevens star. A key member of the UWC team that reached the 2016 Varsity 7s final, Mostert can only have improved since 2016.
Jan Abraham Venter (Maties)
Jan wants this competition more than anything. After the disappointment of missing out of the Varsity Cup, Jan Abraham Venter knows that this could be the last time he pulls a Varsity sports jersey over his head. Now that’s a dangerous man!
Ronald Brown (UJ)
Best attacking player of the tournament in 2016, Brown was a star for both the UJ Varsity Cup and Varsity 7s teams. Seriously slippery and with the acceleration of Louis Hamilton, he was an impossible threat to contain.
