After 30 matches contested by eight teams there are only two teams left and one match remaining in Varsity Netball 2017. The semi-finals saw two runaway victories for UP-Tuks and NWU. Here are some interesting facts from the semi-final round.
Winning margins a big surprise
After Kovsies lost by four goals to NWU and Maties by just two points to Tuks in the group stage, the expectations was that the semi-finals would again be a close affair. The margins of victory (31 for Tuks and 16 for NWU) thus come as a shock to many.
Not good numbers for Maties
The heavy defeat the Maties suffered to the hands of Tuks in Pretoria was the biggest ever for the Maties, surpassing the previous record of 28 goals. The 74 goals they conceded was also their most ever.
Number three for Kovsies
The loss against NWU was the third in a row for Kovsies which is the highest number of defeats consecutively that they have suffered in the competition.
NWU piles up the wins
The victory in Bloemfontein was the 10th on the trot for NWU which includes two at the end of Varsity Netball 2016. This is a new record for NWU and is just two short of the competition record for the longest unbeaten run held by the Kovsies between 2014 and 2015.
Yet another award for Zandré
Zandré will win “the race” for the most Player of the Match awards. She earned her second consecutive one against Kovsies and ninth in total which is two more than the seven by Shadine van der Merwe of Tuks which is the second most in the competition’s history.
