The penultimate round of Varsity Netball produced some scintillating netball and the first upset of the competition. Here are five interesting facts from round six.
UWC make big strides
With the University of the Western Cape (UWC) upsetting the University of Johannesburg (UJ) by 59-46, they have recorded their second victory in the competition. This is more than the University of Cape Town, who they replaced, could manage in the competition in the previous four years.
Tough going for UJ
The loss to UWC was the sixth suffered by UJ which is the most ever by them in the competition and the most consecutive.
So close for Maties
In the Maties 49-45 win over the Kovsies in Stellenbosch, it was just the third time that a team fell one point short of reaching 50 goals for a bonus point.
First defeat for captain Mostert
Tanya Mostert’s proud record of not tasting a defeat to the Maties in nine previous encounters came to an end in match number 10 when her team lost for a second consecutive year to the Stellenbosch students.
Second lowest in PE
Only in one previous Varsity Netball match has there been less goals scored than the 66 in Port Elizabeth on Monday when NWU won by 44-22. The fixture in 2014 between the Maties and the University of Cape Town (Maties winning by 45-16) only produced 61 points.
