After securing their first victory against VUT in their debut Varsity Netball season, the University of Western Cape captain is brimming with confidence when talks of what’s to come comes to the fore. The 67-43 bonus-point victory against their competitors from Vaal should give you an indication that the Cape Town-based outfit might be a force to reckon with a year or two from now.
“It meant so much for the team, the management and the university itself. We have worked so hard and kept on pushing until we achieved our goal and that feeling is indescribable. I am proud of the girls and how far we have come,” said UWC captain Desmorine Gawanas.
Despite going down four times, they now occupy the sixth spot on the log and heading into the final two games, Gawanas says the team will look to minimise mistakes in search of another triumph.
“The goal is to minimise on basic mistakes and to take each quarter as it comes. We would very much like a win against UJ and even though they have experience in Varsity Netball, we can be strong opponents by doing what we trained to do.”
And anything is possible…UJ is having their worst season to date and with five losses in five games, it seems as though coach Janine du Toit’s side can take advantage.
“We have had a change in our game plan and the plan changes according to our opponents,” said the Namibian-born captain.
Although they will face tough competition from Tuks in their final group game, they will end off their campaign knowing what to bring to the plate come next season.
“We are busy with recruitment, so we will definitely come back stronger next year. This year we experienced a very high level competition that we weren’t exposed to in the past,” said Gawanas.
When a captain of a team talks so boldly about what’s to come, perhaps attention should be paid. We might just have a story of resurgence surfacing.
