The University of the Western Cape earned their first victory in Varsity Netball, earning a bonus-point win over VUT in Pretoria on Monday evening.
UWC and VUT were both in search of their first points when the two sides met for the third match of Monday evening’s Varsity Netball action.
UWC started the stronger of the two sides, taking an early 8-4 lead. They soon extended that to 11-6 as VUT fell to an early deficit. The first power play was taken in the first quarter with the scores at 13-8, and while VUT would have hoped to pull themselves back into the match, it had little effect, with the scores at 17-12 after the power play.
The quarter ended with UWC extending their lead to seven points on 20-13.
The second quarter was all UWC, as the Capetonians extended their lead even further, looking as though they already had the match wrapped up at 37-21 at the midway mark.
The third quarter was devastating as UWC ruthlessly cruised past the 50 mark, grabbing a bonus point on the way to a 58-32 lead.
Cindy Amsterdam stamped her authority on the court, bossing the final third of the court. Jami Vermeulen complimented her brilliantly as the pair combined to great effect.
UWC were thrilled as they left Pretoria with their first victory and a full five points, the final score 67-43.
