Debutants UWC suffered a 93-16 loss against the in-form Kovsies at the Callie Human Hall in Bloemfontein on Monday. Unlike their previous encounters, the women from Cape Town failed to add more than 20 points on the scoreboard, making it three games and three defeats. On top of that, they are set to take on Pukke, the second ranked team, in Round Four.
The University of Western Cape netball squad boast the talent to be amongst the top performers in Varsity Netball, but the three defeats seem to have them with their backs against the wall.
The 80-41 defeat to Maties on 27 August proved that the ladies are capable of putting points on the board, and despite their 43-51 loss against the Madibaz, they still remained focused on the plan. But the 93-16 defeat against the cool, calm and collected Kovsies team on Monday came as a shock.
To add fuel to the flames, the fourth game is against an unbeaten Pukke side. After overcoming UJ 59-25 in Round One, they went on to beat Tuks 40-34 and in this week’s encounter, they demolished VUT 94-15. Currently ranked second behind Maties, they will look for a high-scoring game against UWC to top the log when they meet in Round Four. It won’t be easy to bring down Janine du Toit’s side, but the North-West University students are a determined bunch, so it’ll be a situation of ‘may the best team win’.
