With the third round of Varsity Netball something of the past, only the Maties and NWU have an unblemished record. Here are six other things we learned in Round Three.
Brandt on fire
Stephanie Brandt became the first Maties player to receive the FNB Player of the Match in two consecutive matches.
Talent runs in the family
Yet another sister paring played in the same match for the same team. In Stellenbosch, Charmaine and her younger sister, Janneke, were the shooting combination for a couple of quarters. Megan Gossmann and Nichole Taljaard, half-sisters at Maties, were in action in the same match.
At the Kovsies you have the Retief sisters, Gertriana and Ané. Previous sister pairings in the competition were Micaela and Simone Peters (University of Cape Town), Kara and Yolande Willemse (Madibaz) and Karla and Tanya Mostert (Kovsies). Lerato Moeko of VUT just missed out on playing with her older sister, Keneuwe. Both were in action for VUT up until last year.
Goals galore in power play
The Kovsies scored no less than 7 goals in the final two minutes of their encounter against the University of the Western Cape (UWC). It was in the second power play which meant the Kovsies increased their lead from 79-16 to 93-16 within two minutes.
NWU equal their own record
The NWU equalled the record for the largest winning margin in Varsity Netball with their comprehensive 94-15 victory over the Vaal University of Technology (VUT). Last year in the corresponding fixture the goal difference was also 79, when NWU won by 93-14.
New records for Kovsies
The Kovsies recorded their biggest win (77 goals) and most goals (93) in Varsity Netball on Monday. Their previous records were 76 and 91 goals respectively.
Unlucky 13 for VUT
VUT have now lost 13 consecutive matches, the joint most-ever. UCT also lost 13 in a row between 2013 and 2014.
