The 2017 Varsity Football tournament is reaching its pivotal stage as the teams are fighting for a place in the final four. The top two teams will secure home semi-finals. UWC are currently 3 points adrift of CUT who occupy second spot.
UWC have lost two matches of the five they have played and both of these were away from home. UWC are currently fourth with 9 points from five games. Varsity Sports had a chat with head coach Salie Adams ahead of two vital fixtures for the Cape side.
“It has been a great season and the boys are responding well,” he said. “Just a minor hiccup at CUT and TUT but the boys know what’s at stake.”
With five teams battling for three semi-final spots it’s not going to be easy for coach Adams’ boys as they have to travel to Gauteng for both of their games. With the bad travellers tag hanging over the UWC boys, we will have to wait and see if they can shake it off.
“We are still on track with the objective that we set when the tournament started, we just have to make sure that we get maximum points in the last two remaining games and qualify for the semi-final,” Adams added.
Standing in UWC’s way are UJ and Tuks, and they will have to go all out and get the maximum points. With UWC securing maximum points in the next two games that would secure a home semi-final, which will be welcomed by the ‘operators’ of the Operation Room.
