Varsity Football is approaching the halfway mark in the round robin format. We are a long way from knowing which teams will make it to the semi-final stages, but things are heating up as the tournament is slowly taking shape. Winter may be dragging on, but the action on the field of play is hotter than ever before. It’s not easy to predict winners or margins in each match, as there are always surprises. But here goes!
CUT vs TUT
‘TUT are on fire’ are the words that could be used to describe their start to the season. They have goals in them and they cannot stop scoring. In fact, they are scoring goals for fun. Their tails are up and they are definitely high on confidence at the moment. But in Bloemfontein they are facing a daunting task of upstaging CUT in their own backyard. CUT have made it clear that they are no easy pickings, especially at home. Expect a difficult game for both teams as there will be little to separate the two teams.
Prediction: TUT 1 CUT 1
Wits vs UJ
Its derby time in Jozi! UJ will take a short trip to Milpark to face their cross-town rivals in a game they are expected to win. But the question that needs to be answered is that of Wits’ first win of the season against CUT last week. Was it a fluke? It matters little as that win will have helped them to regain their confidence just in time for the derby. While Wits finally got their first win, UJ lost 2-0 at home to TUT. UJ are the bookies’ favourites to win this time and they should, just.
Prediction: UJ 2 Wits 1
UWC vs NWU
UWC are a difficult team to beat at home. They are just a different team altogether and they have a knack of making their home ground advantage count. Only one point separates the two teams in third and fourth positions. NWU are are above the Mother City-based outfit, but that could totally change after their contest.
Prediction: UWC 2 NWU 1
