Varsity Sports has its own Paul the Octopus, a goldfish named Themba, who predicts results. While fans guess on the Varsity Sports app and Themba uses psychic abilities, I will take an educated crack at what will happen this Thursday night.
UFH vs TUT
After they dramatically rescued a point with virtually the last kick of the game in the Tshwane derby against UP-Tuks, TUT are without a doubt the overwhelming favourites to win this match.
The defending champions will subject the so called whipping boys in this mini league tournament to another hiding. TUT will be determined to open their account with an eye-catching victory and they will use this game to signal their intention of defending their title.
Prediction: TUT 3 UFH 1
NWU vs Wits
NWU opened their account with a stunning 3-0 victory over UFH. They are known for their good start. Wits were exposed and suffered a humiliating 6-0 defeat at the hands of former champions UWC. Things are set to go from bad to worse for them as Mafikeng is not an easy place to go to.
NWU fans have a way of intimidating visiting teams with their electrifying atmosphere. Expect Mafikeng to maintain their 100% record without breaking a sweat. Wits confidence must have taken a knock after that embarrassing opening day defeat. They won’t open up at the back like they did but they are facing yet another defeat.
Prediction: NWU 3 – Wits 0
CUT vs UWC
Was their opening day victory against UJ a fluke? No. CUT is a hard-working team and rely on their collective unit to get results. They will build on that great start by registering another win. UWC are not good travellers and despite registering their biggest win of the competition against Wits, they face a difficult opponent in CUT. It won’t be a high scoring game but it will be worth watching.
Prediction: CUT 2 UWC 1
Tuks vs UJ
This is without a doubt the pick of Round Two matches. It’s a big game and a lot is expected from both teams. It’s the two-time champions Tuks against the two-time runners-up UJ. Expect fireworks as sparks are set to fly. Tuks played the best football of Round One and were unlucky to concede a last minute equaliser against arch rivals TUT in a 1-1 draw in the derby. UJ were stunned 1-0 by CUT in Bloemfontein. It’s going to be a humdinger as both teams will be looking to register their first win of the season.
Prediction: Tuks 2 UJ 1
