If last week’s electrifying encounter between NWU and the University of Fort Hare (UFH) is anything to go by, NWU has made its presence felt in this year’s Varsity Football tournament.
The boys from the North delivered a nicely wrapped, devastating 3-0 beating to UFH that saw NWU maintain their undefeated Varsity Football winning streak against UFH, and made their presence felt with their stunning maiden win in the first leg of the tournament.
Last week’s win against UFH propelled NWU to a comfortable second spot on the tournament log, with University of the Western Cape occupying the number one spot on the log.
With Sandile Mbatha, and Cameron Chweu – the newest addition to the NWU football team eager to prove his worth – singing from the same hymn book, the scoreboard quickly turned from 0-0 into a goal scoring frenzy, with Mbatha’s genius finding the back of the net twice and Chweu delivering the devastating third goal that extended the NWU boys’ lead in the game to three, leaving their hosts, UFH, egg-faced with no goals.
Cameron Chweu, was awarded FNB’s Man of the Match prize as well as the Samsung’s Best Shot accolade.

Pleased with the team’s performance, Vuyo Sambo, NWU team manager said, “The fruits of the hard work we (the team – from the players on the pitch to the technical team) have sewn as we prepared for this tournament, are showing. As a team, we understand that peak physical performance must be complimented by mental agility. That is what we saw last week.”
This week, on 3 August, it will be NWU’s opportunity to host a match on their home turf in the second round of the tournament as they face off with the clever boys, Wits University.
