Less than seven months ago Wayde van Niekerk made history, broke records and brought pride to a nation. A few years before that, he was ripping and roaring around athletics tracks for Kovsies in Varsity Athletics. Next week the Wayde van Niekerks and Caster Semenyas of 2020 will announce themselves to South Africa ahead of their four year journeys to Tokyo 2020.
“Varsity Athletics is so exciting and fun and the team element gives it another dimension,” said Caster Semenya, who represented Pukke last year. “Varsity Athletics is not only the breeding ground for our future champions, but also gives a great opportunity and exposure to our current champions. A truly South African competition.”
In 2017 Varsity Athletics will continue to ink its spot on the South African athletics calendar. Now in its fifth season, it has become a highlight for even the most established of athletes.
This year, the competition will take place over two meetings once again – in Potchefstroom on 3 March and in Tuks, at their newly-renovated stadium, on 31 March.
The event will once again be made up of two divisions: the Top 15 (A) division which will include eight universities, and the Top 10 (B) division, with four universities.
A Division: Tuks, UJ, Pukke, Kovsies, Maties, UWC, Madibaz, TUT
B Division: UCT, UL, VUT, CUT
