Madibaz beat UWC by two wickets on Wednesday afternoon to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive.
Madibaz won the toss and elected to field first. UWC got off to a slow start with only 41 runs coming from the first five overs. Adrian du Toit and Tayo Walbrugh put on 42 runs for the first wicket before Walburgh was caught leg-before-wicket by Christoffels. Adrian du Toit hit 55 from 33 balls, before he was caught on the boundary trying another flamboyant shot.
Although UWC did not lose many wickets, the runs dried up in the middle of the innings. Zubayr Hamza scored 26 runs, but apart from him and Du Toit there was not much to write home about. By restricting the chaps from the Western Cape to 145/6, Madibaz would feel they were still in with a chance.
Madibaz started their run chase slowly, after five overs they only had 30 runs on the scoreboard. But they were peddling on quite nicely, not risking big shots, but keeping the scoreboard ticking. But after the departure of Mathew Christensen who scored a patient 20 from 30 balls, one got the feeling UWC lost a bit of initiative.
Madibaz were hungry for a victory. Aubrey Ferreira’s 17 from 20 balls and Vian Maritz’s 31* from 25 balls kept their foot on the pedal. In the end it was Onke Nyaku with 20* from 11 balls securing the victory.
