The cricket facilities at the North-West University Potchefstroom campus (NWU-Puk) are outstanding and by far the best of all the South African universities.
This is according to Duitser Bosman, Chief Executive Officer of Varsity Sports. “The hosts, NWU-Puk’s Conrad de Swardt (cricket manager) and the North West Cricket Union’s Heinrich Strydom (Chief Executive Officer), put in a lot of preparation to prepare the best pitches and fields.”
The third annual Varsity Cricket tournament will be played from 30 January till 4 February 2017 on the fields of the NWU-Puk and the North West Cricket Union’s Senwes Park.
It is no coincidence that Potchefstroom, the town on the banks of the Mooi River, will play host for the third year in a row. Renowned for its excellent sporting facilities, several international athletes make use of these facilities.
Former New Zealand test player and coach of defending champions, University of Pretoria, Kruger van Wyk, said, “The Puk is a nice place to play cricket, because of their good facilities. Senwes Park is also a fantastic stadium with a good pitch and a nice atmosphere.”
The NWU treasures its relationship with Varsity Sports. “It is an honour to once again host the annual Varsity Cricket tournament,” said NWU spokesperson Bertie Jacobs.
“The support in Potchefstroom from spectators is amazing. Varsity Cricket plays a vital role, not only for the development of cricket, but also sport in general,” said Cyril Henry, Director of Sport, Arts and Culture of North West 405, the municipality which includes Potchefstroom.
“It is a week of big sixes, stunning deliveries and passionate crowds all whilst the game of cricket reaches new, loftier heights. Best of luck to all the participating universities, the players and the respective coaching teams. Irrespective of the outcome, cricket will be the winner,” said Jacobs.
