NMMU scored two goals in the second-half to secure an impressive 2-0 victory over UWC in Cape Town.
The teams went into the half-time break deadlocked at 0-0, but goals from Niven Kops and Leroy van Rensburg in the second half saw the visitors take the spoils.
The visitors started brightly and got a few shots on target, but UWC managed to respond by creating some opportunities of their own with Xolisa Sigenu and Curtley Beukes coming close.
The tense nature of the first half continued, but both sides battled to find the finishing touch and they went into the half-time break level at 0-0.
NMMU came out strong in the second half despite some strong support from the home fans in Cape Town and it was not long before Niven Kops rose above the defence to flick a Leroy van Rensburg free kick into the top left corner.
UWC were handed a great opportunity to equalise when NMMU goalkeeper Lyndsay Jennings handled a back-pass, but they could not convert the indirect free kick.
Instead, it was NMMU who would score next when Van Rensburg scored the goal that would seal victory after a good pass from Peter Thekiso.
