UWC made it two wins from two on Friday afternoon, defeating CUT 4-1 at a gusty Fanie du Toit field.
Most of the possession was in favour of UWC in the first quarter if the match, as they continued right where they left off on Thursday night. But CUT found their feet and the match became an even contest, with nothing between the two sides.
Neither keeper was tested and the match became a midfield battle, with the wings starved of the ball. Janice Smith fired over bar with a volley midway through the first half; the first real threat on goal between the sides.
UWC’s defence was vulnerable to counter attacks by CUT’s Nolwazi Shongwe and Viwe Mpeta. But Drishana Pillay – a defender catching the eye early on in the tournament with strong displays in defence – kept CUT at bay.
But there was to be drama when CUT’s Viwe Mpeta whipped in a corner, which was hand-balled by UWC’s Bongeka Jezile. CUT’s Nomonde Nomtsheke stepped up to slot the ball in the bottom right corner. Nhlamulo Mathebula dived the right way, but couldn’t keep it out.
Then, right on the stroke of half time, UWC’s Abongile Dlani, Janice Smith and Amogelang Motau combined brilliantly with a string of one-touch passes before Miche Oosthuizen headered in off a cross to equalise.
The second half was another tight midfield battle. An unlucky deflection gave CUT keeper Lucrecia Manis problems. She managed to palm it away when it looked as though it would lob over her, but it fell to Janice Smith in front of an open goal, who easily finished off to make it 2-1 to UWC.
UWC continued to dominate, pushing for a third goal. Amogelang Motau fired in a long distance shot, which was palmed away, but it fell to Janice Smith who easily finished off to make it 3-1. Before long it was 4-1. FNB Player of the Match Amogelang Motau found herself one-on-one with CUT’s keeper and calmly finished off.
UWC won comfortably, 4-1.
