The NWU-Pukke trashed a rather hopeless Kovsies outfit by 58-36 on Monday in the third round of Varsity Netball in Johannesburg.
With it, the Pukke managed their second consecutive bonus point win and a third victory in a row to take up second position on the log.
It was the heaviest defeat the Kovsies have suffered in the history of the competition, surpassing the 21 goal loss against UP-Tuks a week ago. There was never any doubt about the outcome as the Pukke managed a 12 goal lead (19-7) by the end of the first quarter.
A young and inexperienced Kovsies team made a huge number of errors of which quite a couple were basic ones. The shooters Sigi Burger and Renske Stoltz nailed one goal after the other and severely punished the Kovsies for their mistakes.
With the match already in the bag, coach Dorette Badenhorst rang the changes in the final quarter, giving all her players some game time. With all the changes the Pukke still managed to win the quarter 13-12.
The losing side simply did not have an answer to a flawless Pukke attack in which the centre Romé Dreyer played a big role. She was named FNB Player of the Match.
The 36 goals are five less than Kovsies’ previous least amount of goals the scored in a Varsity Netball match.
