Mongae scores quickest Varsity Football goal
The fastest goal in this year’s edition of Varsity Football was scored when NWU-Mafikeng hosted UWC. NWU-Mafikeng’s Orebotse Mongae scored from close range after just 27 seconds, following some great work on the right flank by Mogomotsi Molefe. UWC had not even touched the ball. The goal triggered spine-tingling cheers from supporters and opened the floodgates as the back of the net was rattled six more times in the seven goal thriller.
A touch of brilliance from Ntsabeleng
Skillful winger Katlego Ntsabeleng was in the form of his life when UJ hosted Johannesburg rivals Wits in Soweto. Ntsabeleng, who was named man of the match, produced a moment of brilliance when he dribbled past two Wits defenders on the left wing before squeezing the ball past Brylon Peterson’s near post. Ntsabeleng’s first touch and ball control showed why he is highly rated by UJ coach Mandla Zwane.
UWC goalkeeper shows fighting spirit
Defending champions UWC were having a horrible night against NWU-Mafikeng, going 4-0 down within the first half an hour. After they pulled one back via an own goal, UWC goalkeeper Brent Layman showed that he has not thrown in the towel when he pulled off a great fingertip save to deny Thapelo Tlabakwe of NWU-Mafikeng in the 38th minute. It must have lifted the spirits of his teammates. UWC fought back, but were unfortunate to lose 4-3.
Msibi makes penalty save
Dumisani Msibi showed why he is one of the best young goalkeepers in the country when he denied CUT’s Vusi Vena from the penalty spot just before the hour mark. Rorisang Rapelang had handled the ball in the box, but he was saved by his goalkeeper. TUT were leading 2-0 at the time and they went on to score two more to make it 4-0. Thanks to Msibi, TUT finished the game with a clean sheet.
Motau scores straight from corner
After Jurgen Booysen scored straight from a corner for Tuks last week, TUT’s Thabang Motau repeated that on Monday against CUT. Motau, who was named man of the match, also netted from the corner to open the scoring for the league leaders in the 12th minute. Motau created TUT’s second goal and he was also heavily involved in the build-up to the fourth as the hosts booked their spot in the semi-finals. What a performance.
