Kovsies ended the home leg of Varsity Hockey with a resounding 5-0 win over Wits on Monday night.
The home side started like a house on fire and established their dominance early on, forcing Wits to defend from the outset.
By the end of the first chukka they were already 3-0 ahead, and they kept the pressure squarely on the Johannesburg side after the break as Wits were forced to pull together.
To their credit, Wits tried their best to take the ball to their opponents, but they lacked the penetration that Kovsies enjoyed on attack.
The determined Wits side managed to keep the game scoreless, with a Kovsies goal early in the second period disallowed.
Kovsies started imposing themselves at the start of the third period but the Witsies held them off somehow after more than a few dangerous moments.
Kovsies were in search of the bonus point goal and it eventually came when Tanya Brits was on hand to finish a fluid attacking movement.
The Wits defence was understandably tiring towards the end of the game, but they held on admirably to limit the damage, with Demi du Toit the central figure.
However, it was not long before Lienkie van de Heever was able to put one final nail in Wits’ coffin when she tucked away a fifth goal.
Wits had a chance to grab a late consolation, but the shot went wide and the visitors ended the match without a goal.
