NWU-Pukke booked their place in the final of the Varsity hockey series when they won a tight battle against Kovsies in the very last minute on Sunday.
Pukke silenced the partisan home crowd at the Kovsies astro field when they prevailed by 3-2, thanks to Carissa Vorster’s second goal of the match in the dying seconds. Her heroics ensured the Pukke’s fifth victory in as many matches.
The Potchefstroom side is the only unbeaten side in the competition and now enjoy an unassailable 7-point lead over the second placed Kovsies at the top of the table.
This makes the results of their remaining round-robin matches against Tuks on Monday and UCT next Sunday purely academic – at least for them.
The battle for the second spot in the final remains wide open though, with Kovsies, Maties and Tuks all still in the mix. Kovsies has 16 points thanks to their three victories, while Maties and Tuks are both on 15 points.
Tuks kept their interest alive with a 5-0 drubbing of Wits. Lilian du Plessis scored twice for the Pretoria side.
At the University of Johannesburg’s astro field Maties was far too strong for NMMU, beating them 7-0. Chloe Pheiffer scored four goals, while Anna Malan contributed two.
The match between UCT and UJ ended in a 1-1 draw.
Sunday’s results:
Tuks 5 (Kate Koenig, Tarryn Moses, Lilian du Plessis 2, Simone Barrett), Wits 0.
Kovsies 2 (Izelle Lategan, Maria Wessels), NWU-Puk 3 (Carissa Vorster 2, Carli Gericke).
