Last night, a packed-to-capacity Feather Market Hall saw the second round of Varsity Sing take place in Port Elizabeth, as the choirs of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), Rhodes University, and the Gauteng’s Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) took to the stage.
More than 1 500 residents and fans from across PE showed up to support the Eastern Cape choirs in their quest to win the inaugural Varsity Sing competition.
The choirs each performed one song, from one of the three categories: Own Choice, South African Composition, and Original Composition. NMMU performed Great God Almighty, Rhodes University performed Halalisa, and TUT performed Op Die Rante. Judges were very impressed with NMMU’s performance, and commended their choir conductor, Junita Lamprecht-Van Dijk, on a job well done.
“You look amazing, everybody sounds amazing, and everybody is smiling! My mind has been blown!” exclaimed this week’s guest judge, Emo Adams.
All three choirs will have a final opportunity to impress the judges next week, when they will each perform their two remaining pieces.
Varsity Sing is broadcast on kykNET (DSTV channel 144) every Thursday night at 20h30, and will conclude on 13 October. For the full Varsity Sing schedule, click here.
