Hlalele the hero again
After scoring the goal which crowned TUT the kings of Tshwane last week against Tuks, striker Jacob Hlalele was the hero again in his side’s 2-1 victory over UFH on Monday. The 23-year-old kept his cool when he headed home Kagiso Kgetjepe’s cross after the hour mark to make it three out of three wins for TUT, who are top of the table. Hlalele is a hot favourite to finish as the top scorer in the competition.
Motaung keeps up with the times
If you thought celebrating goals with the latest dance moves is just a thing for players, then think again. Tuks coach Tlisane Motaung showed he is keeping up with the times when he celebrated his side’s third goal, scored by Mogau Khiwana, with the “dab” – a move many players are now performing when they score goals. Motaung certainly enjoyed the moment because it sealed a great win for Tuks after their 1-0 defeat to rivals TUT at home last week.
You can’t keep a good man down
UFH captain Siphamandla Zanekile looked to be in serious pain on his shoulder when he landed awkwardly after going for the ball in the air. But after being treated by the medical team, he got back on to the pitch, only to fall awkwardly again on the same shoulder a few minutes later. Despite being in pain and at times uncomfortable, Zanekile continued and showed true qualities of a leader.
Small body, big heart
Tuks striker Mbongeni Masilela was one of the smallest players on the pitch when his side visited UJ in Soweto, but he showed great determination to beat three players who are much bigger than he is to score Tuks’ second goal in a 3-0 victory. Masilela, who is a big fan of Real Madrid and Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, was delighted with his strike after he was denied a goal when he was ruled offside a few minutes earlier.
CUT frustrate defending champions
UWC, the reigning champions, were on the way to their first victory in this year’s edition of Varsity Football until their hearts were broken seven minutes from time by CUT. Leading 2-1 thanks to a brace from captain Josh Silent, UWC went to sleep at a crucial moment as they allowed Katlego Motaung to secure a valuable point for CUT with a goal in the 83rd minute. UWC were let down by poor defending.
