After a disappointing first game performance in the Varsity Football tournament a week ago, the NWU Mafikeng Campus goalkeeper, Amogelang Maduo, proved all his detractors wrong by delivering a sterling display between the sticks to ensure a convincing victory for his team against The University of Fort Hare.
Amogelang had this to say after the game: “I need to forget the first game. Blunders are something that happens once in a while in football, although no one expects them to happen. It was a wake-up call for me and the entire team.”
Amogelang further went on to say that the previous game was not a true reflection of the team’s capabilities. He insists that the team has not reached its peak yet and that the best is yet to come.
“Before the game against the University of Fort Hare there was a lot of pressure on me,” he said. “But I appreciate the confidence the coach showed in me, considering that there are two other goalkeepers in the team that can compete at the same level.”
The final year Sports Science student, who hails from Kimberly, sites football as his first love. Before he joined the soccer Institute, he plied his trade with the Stars of Africa Academy in Johannesburg where the likes of Tokelo Rantie, Tefu Mashamaite, Surprise Ralane and Thabang Phete nurtured their talent under the tutelage of legendary coach Farouk Khan.
