UJ got the home leg of their Varsity Hockey campaign off to a promising start on Saturday by beating NMMU 4-1.
The home side were helped by two NMMU own goals as they established dominance over the team from Port Elizabeth.
NMMU were forced to defend for lengthy periods in the match, and the pressure proved too much to handle as they unfortunately found the back of their own net twice.
Goals from UJ’s Louise Coertzen and Casey-Jane Cowell helped seal the comfortable victory for the Johannesburg team, with NMMU’s Danielle Judge grabbing a consolation goal for the visitors.
Coertzen was the stand-out player for UJ, imposing herself on the opposition throughout to be named FNB Player of the match.
The scorers:
For UJ: Own goal 2, Louise Coertzen, Casey-Jane Cowell
For NMMU: Danielle Judge
