Mafikeng Soccer Institute captain Sipho Mateis, known by his football alias ‘Captain Daizer’, took over the reins as the Soccer Institute captain in 2014 and has strived to excel ever since.
The football fanatic is due to complete his second degree – a BSc in Microbiology and biochemistry – at the end of the year.
Captain Daizer, a former soccer player of Moroka Swallows FC development, having also played for Harmony Sports Academy in 2006, is ready to lead the team from the front as the 2016 Varsity Football tournament kicks into gear. NWU-Mafikeng kicked off their campaign last week against UJ, conceding defeat 6-2.
“The NWU-Mafikeng team respects all the teams but we are not threatened,” said Mateis, referring to his strategy for the tournament. “We are going to do our level best, and of course put in a top performance for our supporters, the Mafikeng community and everyone around North West.”
The 2016 Varsity Football Tournament which started on 18 July and will end on 22 September, will see four matches staged at the university during the course of the competition, with three televised on SuperSport.
“What I can say is that the guys are ready and excited to compete and the good thing is that we have not sustained any injuries, making everyone ready to play on a platform such as this and allow our players to showcase our God-given talents and compete amongst each other,” said team Captain, Sipho Mateis.
