The Kovsies girls will be hosting the second leg of the Varsity Hockey Challenge this weekend at their home astro at the University of the Free State.
Kovsies goal-scoring machine Izelle Lategan told varsitysportssa: “We are very excited to be playing at ho me this weekend and it will be an advantage for us being on our own turf.
“We have trained really hard and are well prepared for our games this weekend,” Lategan added.
Going into this second round Kovsies have some tough games against two of the tournament favourites UP-Tuks and NWU-Pukke and also Wits.
“We have three very tough games but I think that our game on Sunday against Pukke will be the hardest for us.
“We beat them 4-2 earlier in our varsity fixture and we will want to do that again but it will be very difficult,” she said.
With the South African Under-21 championships having just finished there has been a slight disruption to preparations for all the teams.
“We might not have done that well at the national championships but this week we have had a relaxed build up. We trained hard last night so we are ready for the weekend,” Lategan mentioned.
Playing such massive games at home is definitely going to be benificial for the Kovsies girls and Lategan is aware of this.
“Being at home for this leg is important for us because we know what to expect.
“Having the home support is also going to be great and it is going to help us play better hockey I hope,” she added.
Lategan is one of the top goalscorers in the tournament so far and has been the main reason that her side has been doing well.
“For me the competition has been going well and I have been able to help my side by scoring goals,” she explained.
Kovsies start their home leg of the competition with a tough game against UP-Tuks on May, 11 and then NWU-Pukke on May, 12 and finishing the leg with a game against Wits on May, 13.
