The Kovsies hockey side will be looking to make full use of home ground advantage when action gets underway in Bloemfontein on Saturday, May 11 in the next leg of Varsity Hockey.
The Free State side face some tough fixtures on their home track against the unbeaten pair of NWU-Pukke and UP-Tuks, but their coach Jacques du Toit is hoping to harness some hometown ‘gees’.
“It will be fantastic to play at home, hopefully we can get some good support out there and get some gees going.
“It has already been on campus radio so everybody knows about it and the fact that our match against Wits will be televised has also got a lot of people excited so it should be a great vibe,” he told varsitysportssa.
Although the Kovsies side is missing six players who are representing Free State at the Under-21 inter-provincial tournament in Durban this week, Du Toit is not concerned about the impact it will have on his team’s performance in Bloemfontein.
“It is just one of these things that affects everybody. We only have one week to prepare so we probably will not train that hard and will rather focus on team discussions and player management,” he explained.
Although his team have their work cut out for them against heavyweights UP-Tuks and NWU-Pukke, Du Toit remains upbeat about their prospects in the next leg.
“Every game is a tough game and we just need to take our opportunities. Although we lost our last game against Maties I thought we played some awesome hockey so we just need to keep that going,” he said.
