Pukke vs UJ
The NWU Pukke came from 15-0 down to beat UJ 19-15 in a game that saw four yellow cards. Morne van den Berg opened the scoring for the men from Johannesburg, before Curt Ruiters scored during UJ’s Powerplay in the first half to take an early 15-0 lead.
Pukke recovered quickly and got one try back before half time, through a breakaway try by Ian Heyns as UJ lead 15-7 at the break. The second half was dominated by Pukke however, as Timmy Prince and Eugene Hare went over to mark a great comeback by Pukke. They won the game 19-15.
UCT vs UWC
UWC again provided to be a force to be reckoned with when they trashed their Cape Town counterparts UCT, 39-24. Rohaan Adams of UWC was the star of the game, bagging a hat-trick of tries as his side came from 19-12 down at half time to grab a vital win.
UCT lost a player to the bin early in the second half and UWC capitalised, scoring in both UCT’s and their own Powerplay to open up a big gap. Paul Hendry got a consolation for his side after the full time hooter as UWC ran riot.
Maties vs Madibaz
Maties continued their strong start of day two of the 2016 Varsity 7s competition after they beat the NMMU Madibaz in a rather tight encounter. Maties opened the scoring with Miko de Wet, before Creswin Josephs got one back shortly before half time as they side were all even at the break, 7-7.
Maties however, were far more clinical in the second half as they scored three tries to none to clinch 22-7 win over the men from PE. Captain Tanner Lightfoot crossed the line twice in quick secession, before Kyle Steyn made sure of the result after a great try.
Kovsies vs Tuks
The UP Tuks made light work of UFS Kovsies when a strong finish to the game saw the men from Pretoria claim a 29-12 win. WJ Strydom was the star player for Tuks, scoring two great tries in the first half as they lead Kovsies 10-5 at half time.
Kovsies started the second half strongly when Murray Bandesio scored as Kovsies took a 12-10, but it didn’t last very long. Dewald Naude scored immediately from the restart, before Luke van der Smit scored during the Tuks powerplay as the game ended 29-12 in favour of Tuks.
WSU vs UFH
The Walter Sisulu University provided Varsity 7’s fans with much entertainment in their second match of the day when they beat rivals University of Fort Hare 26-12 in an epic encounter. UFH lead 12-0 at the break but WSU were clinical in the second half, scoring three tries to none.
Lusanda Xakwana was the stand out player for his team scoring two tries, with one of them being in his side’s powerplay as they opened up a big gap over UFH, to grab a valuable win.
