Kovsies had a dream year in 2015, when they were crowned Varsity Cup champions and Varsity 7’s champions in the same year. In 2016, their side fell short of a Varsity Cup semi-final spot, but have the opportunity to make up for it with their Varsity 7s side, as they aim to defend their 2015 title.
Kovises won the Varsity 7’s title in a thrilling final against Tuks a year ago. They lost against Maties and UJ in the tournament, but came out on top 24-19 in the final against Tuks.
“We will be playing to enjoy ourselves, but will definitely give it our all to retain the Varsity 7s title,” said Kovsies’ Varsity 7s coach, Riaan Schoeman. “We have about six players in this year’s team that played last year. They will definitely play with speed, agility and good defence.”
Kovsies have also selected a few players that played in the 2016 Varsity Cup. Coach Schoeman was excited to mention that players such as Elandre Kotzenburg and TJ Godhard will in the squad.
“TJ was the ‘Most Valuable Player’ last year and was selected for a training squad for the SA Sevens team by Neil Powell. Ruben Heymans will also be a player to look out for, he was the Man of the Match in the Koshuis final.
“Arno van Staden and Renaldo Meyer will also be exciting players to look out for,” he concluded.
Although Kovsies aim to retain their title, Schoeman expressed that there is no pressure on the players, they only have one goal: to enjoy themselves and play attractive running rugby.
