Danel Prinsloo won her second race of the Varsity Athletics Challenge when she beat long-standing rival Annuscha Nice in the women’s 800 metres in Johannesburg on Monday.
The Kovsies athlete won the women’s 1500 metres in the first Varsity Athletics meeting in Stellenbosch two weeks ago and followed that up with a commanding performance at UJ.
“I went into the race with the mindset that I can win it even though I did not expect to win,” Prinsloo told varsitysportssa.com.
“I have had a long rivalry with Annuscha [Nice] on the track and I had never beaten her in the 800 metres before.
“During the race I knew I had to run hard in the last 200 metres if I was going to win and I managed that,” she added.
Prinsloo has dominated the women’s middle distance races so far in the competition and will be hoping to continue that when she takes part in the 800 metres again next week at Tuks.
“The 800 metres is the race that I love but I think that I am better that the 1500 metres,” Prinsloo explained.
The friendly rivalry between Prinsloo and Nice could be something to watch out for when the women’s 800 metres takes place next week.
