Men’s 400m national champion Wayde van Niekerk added to his victory in Stellenbosch last week by racing away from the field in Johannesburg to finish in an impressive time of 45.42.
Olympic 800m silver medallist Nijel Amos broke down with an injury and was not able to finish the race, with Pieter Conradie from UP-Tuks doing well to finish in second place.
Kovsies’ Gideon Trotter came from behind in the Men’s 200m to win the race in dramatic fashion. UP-Tuks speedster Akani Simbine took the early lead, but Trotter came off the bend well and overhauled him to cross the line with a blistering time of 20.83.
In the Men’s 400m hurdles UP-Tuks’ PC Beneke broke 50 seconds to blow the rest of the field away, reducing the race to a contest for second place. Schalk Burger from Pukke was next across the line, just ahead of Francois Retief from Maties, but they were nearly a full three seconds behind the dominant Beneke.
