Each week of Varsity Netball we will highlight seven things which caught our attention, and we think it will amuse you too.
1. One person Phumi Shandu, centre of the Ikeys is going to spoil with her player of the match prize money (against UJ) is Paula Macnab, a friend and teammate who loves fast food.
2. Two teams likely to make the final based on the performances in the sixth round are the Maties and Kovsies.
3. Three things you didn’t know about Léfebre Rademan, centre and goal attack of the Kovsies, is that Friday evenings is a steak and chips night, she comes from a small town in the Western Cape, Riversdale and her cousin, Niël Rademan, is the head of the Suidoosterfees in Cape Town.
4. Four famous people who attended the match in Stellenbosch were Elana Meyer (former South African Olympian), Vicki Wilson (former Australian netball player and assistant coach of New Zealand), Amanda Mynhardt (former captain of the Proteas) and Neil Powell (head coach of the SA sevens team).
5. Five things we learned from Round Six of Varsity Netball is that Karla Mostert and Lenize Potgieter both received their first player of the match award, there was three Mosterts – Nelandré (Maties), Karla and Tanya (both Kovsies) – on court in the encounter in Stellenbosch, the Varsity Series would even be even greater if there were more matches of the intensity as was the case in Stellenbosch between the Maties and Kovsies, Sigi Burger is the niece of Springbok Schalk Burger and UP-Tuks will not have Melissa Myburgh and Izette Lubbe back for their play-off matches.
6. Six of the best for the Madibaz for the manner in which they collapsed in the second quarter in their fixture against the Pukke. The team from the Bay could not score a single goal in the first seven minutes of the quarter and could never catch up after that. Many predicted this could have been a tense game, but it wasn’t the case.
7. Seven players (excluding any of her own teammates) Geraldine Odendaal, goal attack of UP-Tuks, would select for her Varsity Dream Team are Danelle Willemse (Kovsies), Charmaine Baard (Maties), Ané Botha (Kovsies), Suné Claassens (Maties), Jo Prins (Maties), Jeanté Strydom (NWU-Pukke) and Zandré Kruger (NWU-Pukke).
