Although they missed out on the play-offs in their first season, VUT coach Geelbooi ‘Gomma’ Masango says his team is thirsty for more Varsity Football.
The Vaal side went down to defending champions UP-Tuks in the final round, which meant that they failed to qualify for the semifinals.
Masango said that they will be doing everything in their power to ensure that they will have another crack at Varsity Football next year.
“We have to qualify for the nationals in Bloemfentein in December, we have already tasted Varsity Football, and we thirst for more, that alone should give us the urge to make sure we qualify,” he said.
Masango praised UP-Tuks for the fighting spirit they showed to hold out under pressure on Monday, and wished all of the teams the best for the rest of the competition.
“I have to congratulate Tuks for the resilience they showed on how to defend as a team and the discipline they displayed, we were in control of the game second half, trying to penetrate, but they stood firm.
“We just have to wish all the teams luck and again, thank all the teams that participated in these games. The good, positive spirit of football was displayed and felt throughout,” he said.
Masango felt the overall experience as a coach in Varsity Football was positive, as it gave him a platform to test his knowledge against other professional coaches.
”I really also have to thank Varsity Sports for the sterling job they have done, the players were so psyched that they wished it could continue non-stop, they are going to cherish it for the rest of their lives,” said the coach.
He also believes that is was a good platform for them to display their skills and talents to their audience.
Reflecting back on the tournament the coach shared his best and worst moments through the season.
“When we fought for a 4-3 win over WSU in Mthatha, that game showed me how much talent I have in my team.
“The worst is the game against Wits which we lost on our home ground. That game caught us by surprise, but all is not lost, there’s next time. Huge thanks to our supporters, never failing in encouraging us on even in dull moments,” he added.
Captain Malesela Chokoe said that he could not have asked more of his players, and they will be hoping for better luck next year.
“The game was not tough, we dominated them. We lost the same way that we have been losing to the other teams, by silly mistakes. Our defence was caught napping and if you are to be victorious, you need to make fewer mistakes.
“It is football hey, we went all out, and we tried our level best. It was just not meant to be. Better luck next time I guess,” said Chokoe.
