TUT put themselves back into contention by showing plenty of character to secure maximum points against Wits in Johannesburg.
It is a welcome result for the Pretoria side who managed to bounce back from a 0-3 loss at the hands of VUT to be the first victim of the infamous Slaughterhouse in Round Three.
TUT arrived in Johannesburg as a team on a mission and brought along a large number of supporters. They ensured the supporters were not disappointed when Sokanyile Masonwabe scored an early goal in the opening 5 minutes of the game.
With TUT in the lead so early in the game, Wits fought throughout the first half to equalize, however that was not to be.
The home side’s fate was sealed in the second half after Wits’ Vuyo Qwesha brought down TUT’s Sidney Seromo in the box to hand the visitors a penalty. Selby Madibana sealed the deal with a well-taken strike by sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
Madibana was awarded the Samsung Super Striker award for the penalty that broke the hearts of the Wits supporters.
“We’ve been working very hard at the practice, we came here [to Johannesburg] prepared because we lost at the previous game against VUT, so it was tough coming here and we had to work hard to win this game,” Madibana said about the team’s performance.
TUT Head coach Bushy Moloi expressed that while this game was hotly contested, the team was not at their best.
“We could have done better and did not show up time and again. I don’t know what was happening. Even against VUT, we made the same mistakes we made against Wits,” Moloi said.
Moloi did however express his satisfaction with his team being able to clinch the victory.
The result leaves TUT in third spot on the Varsity Football log with their next game being against NMMU-Madibaz at the TUT Stadium on August 17.
