The inaugural men’s shop put champion at Varsity Athletics Jaco Engelbrecht is still certain that there is room for him to improve.
Engelbrecht, who won the men’s competition by three metres was slightly disappointed by his performance in Stellenbosch on Monday.
“I was not that satisfied with my effort, I was hoping to go over 19.50 metres,” Engelbrecht told varsitysportssa.com.
The fact that the athlete from UJ believes he can improve means that it is going to be a massive ask for the rest of the field to catch him when the shot put returns in two weeks.
“It was an improvement from the National Championship but I am sure with a small technical adjustment I can get better.
“I have a two week turn-around now so I hope that I can do better,” Engelbrecht mentioned.
Along with a lot of the other athletes Engewlbrecht felt that the weather did play a part in distances on the evening.
“I know for Zarck [Visser] it was quite cold so he didn’t jump as far as he can.
“The Tuks track will be faster and hopefully the weather will be warmer,” he explained.
Engelbrecht is another athlete that supports Varsity Athletics completely and he appreciates the opportunity that they have been given to compete in a competition like this.
“There is a great vibe at the event, it has given athletics a new spark and it is great for South African athletics,” Engelbrecht concluded.
Watch Jaco Engelbrecht take on the other eight universities in the men’s shot put at the Tuks Athletics Track on Monday, 30 Aril.
