Round Two of Varsity Football came to a disapppointing end for the VUT team at the “Slaughterhouse” in Vanderbijlpark as NWU-Pukke grabbed a 2-1 win over them.
The loss sees the hosts moving to the bottom of the standings as they failed to pick up a point.
Both teams went into the game with sheer determination to conquer, but VUT captain Malesela Chokoe was left disappointed by the effort from his team.
“We went into the game with a good game plan, to attack and score goals, however, we were not so successful. We are quite disappointed at losing especially it being on our home ground in front of our community,” he said.
Despite the dismaying outcome for VUT, it was a game well played with a special atmosphere. The main gallery was packed to capacity with an engaged and supportive crowd till the full time whistle blew.
“Our fans were very positive ahead of this game and I think it put some pressure on the team to equal their motivation, especially in the second half. There was a bit of distraction amongst the boys. We are disappointed but NWU gave us a good game,” said coach Gomma Gomma Masango.
Monday is the begining of the next round, where three games will be played including VUT’s face off with front runners TUT. This will grant Masango’s team a chance to redeem themselves.
With five more weeks before the play-offs, VUT should fight hard to make it to the top four.
The game will be played at the Izak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpar, with kick off at 18:00.
