Tuks managed to show their class in the women’s field events when they managed to take all but one event in Stellenbosch on Monday night.
In the women’s high jump the Kovsie Leandri Botha came out on top of the rest of the field when she jumped 1.75 metres to win by five centimetres from Pukke’s Bianca Erwee. Erwee had gone onto 1.70 metres not having a blemish on her record but when she she was unable to clear 1.80 metres she relinquished the title to the student from Bloemfontein because she had not cleared 1.75 metres.
In the discus it was not so close as Tuks’ Maryke Oberholzer showed some serious domination of the rest of the field to win the competition by over five metres. Oberholzer showed the field her talent when she threw her longest distance of 55.93 metres with her first throw of the evening and kept all of her following throws about 50 metres which all would have won the competition. The next closest competitor was Ischke Senekal from NMMU who threw 48.26 metres.
The Long jump was fairly close between three athletes as Zanri van der Merwe managed to sneak the win from Kelly Kingwell and Birdie Carstens – who both jumped the same distance. The athlete from Tuks won the event with a distance of 6.10 metres, which was just enough to beat Kingwell and Carstens who jumped 5.78 metres, but Kingwell took second place because her other jump was further than that of Carstens.
Tuks sealed their dominance on the womens field events when Sonia Smuts took the shot put with a distance 15.46 metres. Her effort was over a metre further than that of second place competitor Biance Van Rooyen from UJ. Smuts only had one competitor on the day and her distances were consistently at the top of the leader board but she left it to her last attempt to set her longest distance which meant that the other girls have got a lot of catching up to do in the coming week if they want to catch Smuts.
