The “injustice” of 2013 will be dealt with when Wits return to Varsity Football after using their time away from the explosive event to reconstruct their squad.
Fulufhelani Hope Munyai is one of four players who could only manage a solitary victory in the inaugural event and has vowed this year will the year they will set the record the straight.
“That year [2013] was an injustice and we will set the record straight now that we have returned [to Varsity Football]. We were not really a tight group in 2013 and we never played together for long enough to understand each other but we have had to rebuild this squad and I can assure you we will be better.
“In 2014, we were able to attract players who would be part of the squad for a few years at least so that we can be build a solid group of players. It was important for us to recruit after our first Varsity Football tournament because most of that squad graduated soon after.
“So we have an exciting group of young players who are capable of out-performing any opponent. There are four of us who know what this tournament is all about and we have been doing what we can to help the rest of the squad get some sort of idea of what to expect,” Munyai told varsitysportssa.com.
Munyai also admitted that it was difficult to keep track of teams who are new to the tournament and that the unknown factor will be challenging.
“Every University wants to be part of Varsity Football and have lifted their standards over the past two years which is clear to see by the three teams making their debuts in the competition.
“So that brings a new challenge because we don’t know what to expect from them or what they have to offer. That is why, in my opinion, this tournament is going to tight and exciting,” he added.
Wits will host UWC in their opening match on Monday, July 20 at 17.00.
