There is a genuine buzz of excitement at UWC ahead of the start of the Varsity Football with players being bombarded by ardent supporters.
The UWC spectators stood by their side throughout the 2014 campaign and according to veteran player Akhona Bonga, this year will be no different.
“The UWC crowd will be bigger and louder this year because everyone is now aware of this tournament. Previously, not much was known about Varsity Football but after 2014, everyone can’t wait for it to start.
“There is such a buzz of excitement when you walk around campus and students approach you to ask when the tournament starts or they tell you that they will be there to support us. It’s just great to know we have the support of our fellow students,” Bonga told varsitysportssa.com.
UWC will travel to Johannesburg for their opening encounter with Wits on Monday, July 20 but as far as knowing their opponents is concerned, Bonga admits they possess very little info on them.
“We don’t really know much about Wits, even though we have played them – and beaten them – at USSA before. However, that result means very little because this is a new tournament and their squad could be different this time.
“Despite knowing very little about them, we will remain focused on what we need to do and making sure we reach the objectives we have set for ourselves,” he added.
The Bellville students will have a new coach, Salie Adams, at the helm but their approach will have a similar look to what it did in 2014, however, the major change implemented by Adams is more the mental approach to the game.
