NMMU-Madibaz kept their playoff hopes alive when they beat UWC by seven wickets to pick up their third victory of the Varsity Cricket tournament.
The Madibaz managed to slow down an explosive start from UWC before another half-century by David White helped guide the PE students to another victory and stop UWC’s momentum after they had claimed victories over UP-Tuks and UCT-Ikeys in Round Three of the competition.
UWC got off to a flying start as they raced to 21/0 after two overs with Ashley Cupido taking a particular liking to Ngazibini Sigwili, dispatching the bowler for three fours in the second over. The opening pair continued to score at more than 10 runs-per-over and raced to 59/0 after five overs.
Moore would put an end to Banda’s innings, removing the batsman for 38. It also ended a 72-run opening stand between Banda and Cupido. The Bellville students were sitting pretty on 91/1 after 10 overs, with Cupido still unbeaten on 36.
UWC maintained their momentum in the second 10 overs and raced to 121/2 after 13 overs before ending their innings on 163/8.
NMMU got off to a fast start as Curtis Samboer and David White made light work of the bowlers, cruising to 45/0 after five overs. Samboer would be the first to go for 28 off 15 balls but the Madibaz maintained their scoring rate to reach 70/1 after nine overs.
White knocked up another half-century, finishing the game unbeaten on 70 off 65 balls, as the match went down to the wire with NMMU sitting on 133/2 after 16 overs and needing a further 31 to win off 24 balls.
White closed the innings out to guide Madibaz to victory.
