Jean Marais’ 107 off 67 balls, the first century in Varsity Cricket, helped the Maties beat Kovsies by 120 runs for their second win of the day on Wednesday.
Maties also posted the highest innings total of the tournament so far, posting 237/2 in their 20 overs
The team from Stellenbosch started well, going for eight an over before Jean Bredenkamp was dismissed for 15 by Corne Dry in the fourth over. After the first five overs they were 41/1.
Despite the loss, the run rate never dropped with Marais and David Bedingham relentless in their scoring as Maties reached 86/1 after ten overs finding the boundary on numerous occasions.
The Kovsies bowlers couldn’t find an answer as Bedingham got 61 off 33 balls before his dismissal by captain Mathys Bruwer. But it did not get any easier as Marais knocked the first ball of the very next over for four to get his 50 off 38 balls. By the 15th over Maties already posted 167 with eight wickets in hand.
Marais eventually got his hundred in style hitting four fours in the 19th over and helping his team set the mammoth total for Kovsies to chase.
Kovsies got their run chase off to the worst possible start losing Andries Gous, Anton Muller, Keagan Rafferty and Leus du Plooy in the opening four overs for only 14 runs. It was a position they never recovered from as they couldn’t cope with the Maties’ bowling attack.
Jacobus Dreyer and Dirk Bruwer will able to hold a partnership until the tenth over when Dreyer was dismissed with Kovsies sitting on 46/5. Kovsies then lost another four wickets with Edward Schutte, the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/12 in his four overs, getting two in the 11th over. After the 15th over Kovsies were 98/8.
Bruwer was the only shining light in the Kovsies innings getting his 50 off 41 balls before he himself was sent packing in the 16th over. Kovsies were eventually all out for 117 after 17.4 overs, losing their third game in two days.
